Jonathan Seiberlich: Isolation Suite

Isolation Suite
Release date: 02/15/2024
Slow & Steady Records announces the release of composer and multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Seiberlich’s Isolation Suite. No stranger to Slow & Steady, Seiberlich has released multiple recordings on the label with his singer-songwriter project Jensen Engineering, as well as with Brass Magic. Isolation Suite finds Seiberlich turning to his primary instrument, the tuba, and methodically blending elements of classical music (he performs regularly with the San Francisco Symphony and Nomad Session Wind Octet) with jazz and improvisational influences.
For the session, Seiberlich featured five original compositions penned during the pandemic that he arranged for a New Orleans-style brass quintet. The ensemble features the stellar lineup of critically acclaimed drummer Scott Amendola, trumpeter Mike Olmos, trombonist Danny Lubin-Laden, saxophonist Raffi Garabedian, and Seiberlich holding it down on tuba and piano. The chemistry clicks immediately, and throughout the entire session. (Fans of Amendola will note that his band Sticklerphonics features both Lubin-Laden and Garabedian, who Seiberlich has also played with for a solid decade in Brass Magic).
The music flows from contemplative to explosive, artfully articulating the myriad of emotions that many experienced in isolation during the pandemic. But the through line is undoubtedly resilience, or as Seiberlich himself puts it: “This suite was created as a necessity in order to process my experiences and survive the moment. To find reasons to continue moving forward.”
