Mind Made of Time
Release date: 6/26/2020
Slow & Steady Records announces the release of Bay Area singer/songwriter and drummer Wolf Quigg’s debut, Mind Made of Time. The title is a reference to the ego and sense of self, “that all we really are, and what we think we are, is based on what we have done, and what we think we will do,” writes Quigg. Mind Made of Time brings together a collection of disarmingly honest songs with lyrics around loss and redemption. “The vocal melodies come right away,” notes Quigg. “The lyrics always come last.”
An in-demand and versatile drummer, Quigg draws from a wide palette of musical styles – from soul, funk, reggae and folk, to high life, jazz, hip hop, and classic rock – all of it anchored by a natural and infectious sense of groove. “Being a drummer, tempo and groove are the first things I heard,” notes Quigg. “For me, it really makes or breaks a song.” Quigg took a similarly natural, albeit unconventional approach to recording: “I believe nothing should be forced. Getting from an original idea to the finished product can be a long journey. Some of these songs are 10 years old!”
Setting up shop at Tiny Telephone Recording (Oakland) with engineer and co-producer Jaime Riotto, Quigg laid all the drum parts down first (“I had all the song forms in my head”) and also played a majority of the instruments. “I sort of had to guess what the song was going to be like without hearing it… we really committed to sounds out the gate,” notes Riotto, who also played bass and synthesizer on a number of tracks. After laying a rhythmic foundation for each song with Riotto, Quigg invited some of his closest friends and collaborators to the studio to further color the tracks – Bastet bandmate and guitarist Justin Rock (“I knew he’d come in and add his unique voice to every track”), keyboardist Javier Santiago (“anything he touches feels and sounds so damn good”), as well as tenor saxophonist Raffi Garabedian (“he plays so beautifully, and always leaves his ego at the door”) and trumpeter Anthony Anderson. A strong first statement, the seven songs on Mind Made of Time are just the beginning for Quigg, who in his matter-of-fact way might summarize his debut best: “honest music that grooves.”
